Music events on February 19th

In 1878, Thomas Edison received a patent for his cylinder phonograph, what he called a "speaking machine" invented on 11-21-1877. He never thought it would have much to do with music. The first recorded words in history were: "Mary had a little lamb." Here's the real skinny on the story: Edison paid his assistant $18 to make the device from a sketch Edison had drawn. Originally, Edison had set out to invent a telegraph repeater, but came up with the phonograph or, as he called it, the speaking machine. When asked why he invented the machine, Edison told reporters, "How else am I gonna listen to my Spice Girls stuff?"
In 1966, "Ballad Of The Green Berets, The" by SSgt Barry Sadler entered the Top 40 chart.

Music-Rock events on February 19th

In 1980, Bon Scott, born Ronald Belford Scott, lead singer of heavy metal band AC/DC, dies in London. He was on tour and chokes on his own vomit after an all-night drinking binge in London. His death comes just months after the band scores its first big American success with the album, "Highway To Hell." He was 33 years old.
In 1981, The New York State Supreme Court ruled that George Harrison was found guilty of plagiarism and ordered to pay the owners of the 1963 song (The Chiffons) "He's So Fine" $587,000. They claimed similarities with his 1970 hit "My Sweet Lord." He was ordered to pay over a half-million dollars in damages to ABKCO Music. ABKCO was owned by former Apple Corps manager Allen Klein, who left the BEATLES label acrimoniously. Of all the riffs, chords, melodies, octaves and notes out there, George had to go and pick those in particular. What are the odds of that?
In 1997, the Trinity Broadcasting Network canceled Pat Boone's "GospelAmerica" show after viewers complained about Boone's appearance on the American Music Awards. He had been promoting his "In a Metal Mood" album by wearing a dog collar and black leather. The show was later reinstated.

Music-R and B / Dance events on February 19th
