In 1968, the nation's first 911 emergency telephone system was inaugurated in Haleyville, Alabama. It failed at times because when someone told a person to dial "9-11", the person couldn't find the "11" button!

Human Achievement and Science events on February 16th

In 1923, the burial chamber of King Tutankhamen's recently unearthed tomb was unsealed in Egypt. Steve Martin made King Tut the subject of a novelty song. Pharoah Tutankhamun also had a prehistoric plumbing system installed in his tomb. Turns out that they also discovered ... PHAROAH'S FAUCET.
In 1948, Miranda, famous moon of Uranus, photographed for first time.

Entertainment events on February 16th

In 1903, actor-ventriloquist Edgar Bergen was born in Chicago, Illinois. His early radio show, "The Edgar Bergen Show," was popular with listeners who tuned in regularly to hear the antics of Bergen and his dummies, Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He appeared, often with the duo, in films as well, including "You Can't Cheat an Honest Man," "Stage Door Canteen," "Fun and Fancy Free" and "I Remember Mama." Bergen died on September 30, 1978; Charlie McCarthy was bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institution. Bergen's daughter, actress Candice Bergen, later wrote a best-selling family autobiography, titled "Knock Wood."
In 1909, actor Hugh Beaumont was born in Lawrence, Kansas. Although he enjoyed a significant film career -- with roles in such features as "The Fallen Sparrow," "The Lady Confesses," "Objective Burma!," "The Blue Dahlia," "Night Without Sleep," "Phone Call from a Stranger," "Night Passage" and "The Human Duplicators" -- Beaumont is perhaps best remembered as Ward Cleaver, the head of the Cleaver clan, in the long-running TV sitcom, "Leave It to Beaver." He died on May 14, 1982.

In 2003, the 302nd epsisode of "The Simpsons", the 300th produced, aired on FOX. Also on Fox, the cast of "Married...With Children" renuited for a one-hour "Reunion" clip show.
