In 1894, comedian Jack Benny was born Benjamin Kubelsky in Waukegan, Illinois. His unpromising career as a violinist was interrupted by World War I duty in the navy, where he discovered he had a knack for making people laugh. He made his first film appearance in 1929, but zoomed to stardom on radio ("The Jack Benny Show") and later repeated that success on television, aided by favorite co-star Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. His films include "Hollywood Revue of 1929," "The Medicine Man," "Broadway Melody of 1936," "It's In the Air," "Artists and Models," "Man About Town," "Charley's Aunt," "To Be or Not to Be," "George Washington Slept Here," "Hollywood Canteen," "The Horn Blows at Midnight," "It's in the Bag" and "A Guide for the Married Man." The self-deprecating, perennial "39-year-old" died of cancer on December 26, 1974. In 1978 his widow, radio performer Mary Livingstone (Sadye Marks), published a memoir of their 47 years together.
