In 1863, showman P.T. Barnum staged the wedding of General Tom Thumb and Mercy Lavinia Warren, both of them midgets, in New York City. The best man was 29 inches tall and weighed 24 pounds.
In 2000, Actor Jim Varney, best known for his comic character Ernest P. Worrell, died in White House, Tennessee, at age 50.

In 1966, Gilligan's Island episode #57. "Gilligan's Living Doll". An experimental robot launched by the Air Force parachutes onto the island. The professor reprograms the robot to walk to Hawaii ("one hundred eleven hours"), but the "lucky" rabbit's foot that Gilligan secretly stuffed into the robot causes it to malfunction upon arrival in Hawaii.

In 1893, comedian Jimmy (James Francis) Durante was born in New York City. The son of a sideshow barker, Durante was nicknamed "Schnozzola" for his bulbous nose. He started in show business at age 16 as a ragtime piano player in Bowery nightclubs and later, throughout the 1930s, he bounced between Hollywood and Broadway, gaining popularity in both stage musicals and in films. His durable career extended on into the 1950s and through the '70s, via radio shows, film roles and appearances on TV, including "The Jimmy Durante Show." His films include "Palooka," "Carnival," "Little Miss Broadway," "Melody Ranch," "You're in the Army Now," "The Man Who Came to Dinner," "It Happened in Brooklyn," "Jumbo" and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." He ended many shows and broadcasts with his trademark signature line, "Good night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!" He died on January 29, 1980.

In 1971, authorities at London's Royal Albert Hall banned a scheduled concert featuring Frank Zappa and his group, The Mothers Of Invention, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, citing some of the lyrics of the songs that made up "200 Motels" were branded obscene after officials heard the soundtrack album to the film "200 Motels" starring Ringo Starr as Frank Zappa and Keith Moon as a nun.
