Government and Politics on February 9th

In 1942, daylight-saving "War Time" went into effect in the United States, with clocks turned one hour forward.

Royalty and Religious events on February 9th

In 1999, The Rev. Jerry Falwell is trying to out Tinky Winky, suggesting that the purple, purse-toting character on TV's popular "Teletubbies" children's show is gay. A spokesman for Itsy Bitsy Entertainment, which licenses the Teletubbies in the U.S., said the purse is actually Tinky Winky's magic bag. "The fact that he carries a magic bag doesn't make him gay," Steve Rice said. "It's a children's show, folks. To think we would be putting sexual innuendo in a children's show is kind of outlandish." The February edition of the National Liberty Journal, edited and published by Falwell, contains an article warning parents that the rotund Teletubby with the triangular antenna may be a gay role model.

Entertainment-TV events on February 9th

In 1953, "The Adventures of Superman" TV adventure series premiered in syndication.
In 1963, on the cover of TV Guide: "Ernest Borgnine of McHale's Navy". Other Articles: Vivian Vance, Ike
In 1964, "The Beatles' First Appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show" (entry part 1) "Ladies and gentlemen," intoned Sullivan, "the Beatles!" With that, the variety-show host turned stiffly to the studio audience, gesturing for a reaction. His prompting was utterly superfluous. The ecstatic screams of the predominantly female audience all but drowned out Sullivan's next words: "Let's bring them on!" As the Fab Four launched into "All My Loving," the camera moved to the crowd, where a plump, dark-haired girl stood poleaxed, in an advanced state of shock. Nearby, another girl couldn't stop bouncing, clutching her hair, and screaming. As the band downshifted into the ballad "Till There Was You," graphics appeared on the screen, identifying each of the Beatles by name. Under John's tag, it read: "Sorry girls, he's married." The frenzy reached a peak as the boys jolted into "She Loves You," singing, "Yeah, yeah, yeah," and shaking their hair.
In 1964, "The Beatles' First Appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show" (entry part 2) They would return for two more songs later in the show and again a week later for another appearance from Miami, but pop-culture history had already been rewritten. This was one of those seismic events about which people ask, "Where were you when?"
In 1973, in a Brady Bunch episode called "The Subject Was Noses", Marcia is dumped by the campus hero because her nose is swollen from an accident; Marcia breaks her date with Charley to go out with the most popular boy on campus, Doug Simpson. She discovers that she has made a mistake when Doug cancels their date because of her swollen nose.
In 1974, on the cover of TV Guide: "cast of M*A*S*H".
In 1985, "Saturday Night Live" host Harry Anderson eats Skippy the Guinea Pig during his monologue. By the way, it was a *joke*: Skippy survived to a ripe old age. (Which for a guinea pig is, what, about a day, maybe two?)
In 1985, on the cover of TV Guide: "Ellen Foley and Harry Anderson of Night Court". Other Articles: Justine and Jason Bateman
In 1990, Most of the bunch returns, but not for long, in CBS's "The Bradys," a failed attempt to turn a '70s sitcom family with goofy problems into a '90s dramatic family with real problems. Florence Henderson and Robert Reed are still Mom and Dad, Ann B. Davis is still Alice and all the original kids come back except Maureen McCormick. Marcia! Marcia! Marcia! aka Brady(30)-something, opposite "Full House" on ABC, it bombed.
In 1991, on the cover of TV Guide: "Lucy and Desi". Other Articles: Twin Peaks, Melissa Golbert
In 1997, the Fox cartoon series "The Simpsons" aired its 167th episode of the series in its eighth season, becoming the longest-running animated series in cartoon history as "The Flintstones" ended a 166-episode run after six seasons in 1966.
