Government and Politics on January 20th
In 1961, John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th US president as he replaced DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, who at age 70 had been the oldest man in to hold the office. He said as part of his brief address, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country," but computer pundits had fun with it and rearranged his phrase on a recording to read "Ask not [what you can do for your country], ask [what your country can do for you]."
In 1981, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States. That same day, 52 American hostages were released by Iran after 444 days in captivity. In the eight years that followed, Reagan was the subject of hundreds of funny records heard all over morning radio and Dr. Demento.
In 1989, George Bush was inaugurated as the 41st president & Dan Quayle becomes the 44th vice president of the U.S.
In 1989, President Reagan becomes first pres elected in a "0" year, since 1840, to leave office alive.
In 1993, Bill Clinton was sworn in as the 42nd president of the United States; Al Gore was sworn in as vice president, but the poor judge sworn in a redwood tree by mistake as he thought, but then realized that it really was Gore!
Entertainment events on January 20th
In 1896, actor-comedian George Burns was born Nathan Birnbaum in New York City. With cigar in hand, and seemingly always accompanied by a young and beautiful woman, Burns made millions laugh with his quick wit and easy style. His career got started with his straight-man act for comedienne Gracie Allen in 1922. In 1926, the two were wed and the "Burns and Allen" team made history, from vaudeville to radio (1932) to films and then TV, beginning in 1950. Several generations used Burns' trademark closing line, "Say goodnight, Gracie," whenever someone made a ditzy comment. Burns later won a best supporting actor Oscar for 1975's "The Sunshine Boys" and also starred in "Oh, God!" (as God), "Going in Style," "Two of a Kind" and "Radioland Murders." Burns died on March 9, 1996, only weeks after his 100th birthday.
In 1903, "The Wizard Of Oz" premiered as a stage play.
In 1990, comedians Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold got married. They have since split up.
Entertainment-TV events on January 20th
In 1961, "You're In The Picture" (TV Game Show) premiered on CBS, it was such a big flop it was cancelled the same day. The next week, host Jackie Gleason spent the entire half hour apologizing for the disasterous TV show.
In 1966, Gilligan's Island episode #54. "The Postman Cometh". The Castaways hear on the radio that Mary Ann's boyfriend in Kansas is getting married. Mary Ann overhears the others talking about her, and mistakenly believes that she has been poisoned by the mushrooms she recently ate, and has only a short while left to live. A hilarious dream sequence follows, featuring the Professor sounding a lot like Cary Grant.
In 1967, "The Monkees" was first broadcast on British TV, after already having been a hit in the US.
In 1973, on the cover of TV Guide: "cast of the Bob Newhart Show: Bob Newhart, Suzanne Pleshette". Other Articles: Dr.Kildare, The Inauguration
In 1987, "The Return Of Bruno" album by Bruce Willis was released. Bruce might have said "If Don Johnson can release a record, then so can I!"
In 1992, "The Dennis Miller Show" premieres in syndication where it lasts, well, six times longer than "The Chevy Chase Show." Among those getting small breaks from the show are sidekick Nick Bakay (later on ESPN and the voice of "Sabrina's" cat puppet, Salem), writer Norm MacDonald, as well as network TV debuts for Henry Rollins and Janeane Garofalo, and the late great Jinky the Fruit Bat.
In 2001, Janet Reno makes SNL appearance! The former attorney general made a surprise entrance during a "Saturday Night Live" skit over the weekend, crashing through a fake brick wall, shouting "It's Reno time!" and dancing with her lookalike: cast member Will Ferrell in Reno drag. Reno and Ferrell, dressed alike in royal blue outfits and pearls, appeared side-by-side in a skit called "Janet Reno's Dance Party." "I like your dress, Janet," she said to Ferrell with a straight face. She commanded the band to "hit it" and launched into the twist.

Entertainment-Radio events on January 20th
In 1958, St. Louis radio station KWK finishes its "Record Breaking Week." Orders of station management had all rock & roll music banned from the airwaves. The disc jockeys gave every rock and roll record in the station library a "farewell spin" before smashing it into pieces. The station manager at KWK, Robert Convey, calls the action "a simple weeding out of undesirable music." Wish today's radio stations would weed out today's pop music in that fashion, but CDs are harder to smash into pieces.
