In 1936, Entertainer Danny Thomas married Rose Marie Cassanti.
In 1952, on "I Love Lucy," forewoman Elvia Allman is glad to hear that Lucy and Ethel are doing just fine on the candy wrapping assembly line in this "Job Switching" episode. It's such music to her ears that she suggests the person running the conveyor belt can "SPEED IT UP A LITTLE!"
In 1956, "Your Money or Your Life" The star of The Jack Benny Program is given that simple, seemingly obvious option by a holdup man. But Benny, whose comic persona was built around his notorious stinginess, has no response. Catching on to the gag, the audience begins laughing (just as they did when Benny first performed this skit on radio). Finally, the robber prods the comedian with the gun and barks, "I said, 'Your money or your life.'" Whereupon Benny delivers in a piteous wail his most famous punch line: "I'm thinking it over!"

In 1974, This day began a new era on ABC-TV as the show that would really help reshape the network in the next five years debut. "Happy Days", the TV Comedy inspired by the movie "American Graffitti" and about life in the 1950s and introduced us to The Fonz, began an 11 year run on ABC-TV. You can find Fonzie's leather jacket from that first show in the Smithsonian Institution. The theme song for the show's first two seasons was the first #1 rock'n roll hit, "Rock Around The Clock". Soon after, more "American Graffitti" actors found TV series within the next seven years. Can you name them all? See The August 1 Datebook for the answer.
In 1977, in his fourth appearance on "Saturday Night Live," Andy Kaufman (as Elvis) performs "Treat Me Nice" and "Blue Suede Shoes."
In 1977, The Coneheads debut on "Satruday Night Live". DAN AYKROYD and JANE CURTIN portray coneheaded aliens for the first time on "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE", on a night when Consumer Activist RALPH NADER is hosting. Sixteen years later, the oddball characters will jump to the big screen, for a "CONEHEADS" movie (The night's musical guest was GEORGE BENSON singing "THIS MASQUERADE")
In 1992, "Seinfeld". It looks harmless enough: an innocuous Tweety Bird Pez dispenser, just a simple gift from Kramer to Jerry. During George's girlfriend's piano recital, Jerry takes the dispenser out of his pocket and not so innocently places it in Elaine's lap. This gesture may have elicited a polite smile or a quiet grin from someone else, someone with more self-control. That someone isn't Elaine. She dissolves into a Wagnerian opus of laughter. Her giggles become chortles, which become Klaxon-like guffaws. As Jerry looks on with stern disapproval, she exits the somber concert hall, still roaring. Noel, the humiliated pianist, declares that she will never forget that laugh. True to her word, at Jerry's apartment a few days later, Noel recognizes Elaine's distinctive laugh - and promptly dumps George.
