In 1904, actor Ray Bolger was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. A former bank clerk, accountant and vacuum-cleaner salesman, Bolger made his professional debut in 1922 in a musical-comedy repertory company. After several Broadway appearances, he made his screen debut in 1936's "The Great Ziegfeld." His subsequent films include "Rosalie," "Sweethearts," "Four Jacks and a Jill," "Stage Door Canteen," "The Harvey Girls," "April in Paris," "Babes in Toyland," "The Entertainer" and "The Runner Stumbles," but he is perhaps best remembered by millions of fans as the understuffed scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz" and in the lead role of "Where's Charley?," a musical version of "Charley's Aunt," in which Bolger had also starred in a long-running Broadway production. Music events on January 10th
In 1949, the Radio Corporation of America, sometimes known as RCA, announced (not to be confused with going on sale, which was on a later date whenever that is) a new 7-inch, 45 rpm phonograph record to compete with the 78 rpm records. Soon, the 45, the record with the big hole in the middle, would change the pop music business. RCA even manufactured a record player that played only 45s -- with a fat spindle that made "stacking wax" real simple and automatic for those romantic times when hands were just too busy to be flippin' records.
In 1976, (not 1978 according to a competeting source) Bluesman Howlin' Wolf dies in a hospital near Chicago following brain surgery. His biggest hit is the 1951 song "How Many More Years," which featured Ike Turner on piano. Wonder if Mojo Nixon really went to his grave and dug him up?
In 1984, The premiere recording of Frank Zappa's classical composition "The Perfect Stranger" was made by the Ensemble InterContemporain under the direction of Pierre Boulez. He claimed the composition was about a vacuum cleaner salesman visiting a housewife, as viewed by the dog.
In 1989, "Wild, Wild, West" single by Escape Club was certified Gold by the RIAA
Music-Country events on January 10th
In 1960, Marty Robbins hit tune, "El Paso", held the record for the longest #1 song up to this date. The song ran 5 minutes and 19 seconds, giving many radio station Program Directors fits; because the average record length at that time was around 2 minutes, and formats didn't allow for records much longer than that, (e.g., 2-minute record, 3 minutes for commercials, 60 seconds for promo, 2-minute record, etc.) DJ's got used to the longer length quickly, however, realizing it gave them time, before the record ended, to actually think of something to say next...
In 1976, R.C., "Convoy" by C.W. McCall peaked at #1 on the pop singles chart. Sales of Citizen's Band radios soar as "Convoy" by ad man CW McCall hits number one on the charts.
In 1997, "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" album by Elmo And Patsy was certified Platinum by the RIAA
In 1998, "Granma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" by Elmo and Patsy debut on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at #87, just over 18 years after it debut on "The Dr. Demento Show".
