This Dave in History (David Letterman)

In 1986, Today would have been Elvis Presley's 51st birthday, so while Carl Perkins sits in with the band, the Peace Through Dramatization Players present "Elvis, a Birthday Memory": We find the troupe in a restaurant, as Chet the poet (Steve O'Donnell) tells the waitress (Marie O'Donnell) that he'd like to get his poems to Elvis (Rick Scheckman), who's sitting nearby. Suddenly, a crazed man with a shotgun (Chris Elliott) bursts inside, forces everyone to the wall. He brings Elvis out to "hang out" until "things cool over"; Elvis wants some pie, then sees Chet's poems, one of which consists of the lyrics to "Love Me Tender." The police suddenly appear outside, so Chris starts a gunfight with them. Dave finally stops the scene, complaining that Chris is improvising again. Marie says that she _wanted_ a script, but Chris berates Dave on his lack of theater experience. Dave says that Chris has ruined the piece and frequently prods Shecky, who appears to be sleeping with his eyes open. Shecky says that Chris is always drunk. Chris says, "Who cares, the show is in its fourth year, riding on vapor." Suddenly, NBC interrupts the show to air "Undersea Kingdom."
In 1987, Chris Elliott promotes his appearance on "Miami Vice."
In 1988, Elvis Presley's Top Ten Household Hints - 3. Out of hairspray? Try Pam.
In 1988, Viewer Mail: Anton Fig pretends to eat the head off a bird, as blood pours out of his mouth. The joke results in hate mail, so weeks later, on the 2/2/88 show, Anton and Kathleen Ankers, the designer who prepared the prop, describe how the joke was done.
In 1991, Morty fetches Danny Thomas from Live-at-Five to do a spit-take with guest Macaulay Culkin, who sets him up with, "Is that your nose, or are you eating a banana?"
In 1991, Top Ten Signs that Your Bank Is Failing - 7. Overhear branch manager muttering to himself, "I wonder if you can eat squirrel?"
In 1992, May We See Your Photos Please? Dave treats two customers at the photo shop to Michael Prego's restaurant. Later in the show they're seen having a lovely dinner there.
In 1993, Top Ten Signs the Guy Who's Pulled You Over Isn't a Real Cop - 8. Can't fit you in back of his car because of all the chickens.
In 1996, the "Blizzard Show" - the whole city was socked in and the show started with the theater 3/4 empty. This particular show had the "we just don't care" attitude that is the foundation of Dave's career. An audience eventually filled in, perhaps with people off the street, and the show concluded with Itzhak Perlman and a band playing klezmer (sp?) (Jewish folk music).
In 1996, "El Blizzardo" hits New York, and only 60 ticket-holders show up for the taping. By the second act, 300 Stand-Bys are invited to fill up the orchestra seats, and since there's snow, there are snowballs, and since there are snowballs, there are snowball fights. Also, Norm MacDonald begins a week of being bumped off the show. Dave claims Norm was snowed in, but Norm is seen in the green room.
In 1996, "Tim" covers the blizzard for the show. Also, we have (via phone) James Earl Jones's alternative names for the Blizzard of '96.
In 1996, Cold start: Dave, outside with the 2 models, announces that there will indeed be a show; he rides in on a sled. (Paul appears out of the snow, too.)
In 1996, Dave talks on the phone to Regis, who didn't do a show today.
In 1996, Top Ten Blizzard Safety Tips - 3. For current weather updates call All Roker at home at 212-975-6401.
In 1996, Top Ten list (see above) is presented by CBS weatherman Mark McKuen.
In 1997, "Products Rejected by the FDA" includes a "catnip patch".
In 1997, Guests Woody Harrelson (gives out hemp caps), Jackie Chan, and John Pizzarelli.
In 1997, The 1997 interns appear, and include Leonard Tepper.
In 1997, Top Ten Signs President Clinton is Losing Weight - 8. He's been officially downgraded from "tubby" to "husky."
In 1997, Video of Blizzard of '96 ("El Blizzardo").
In 1998, Guest Minnie Driver enters from the audience's right side.
In 1998, Know Your Current Events (now with a boom microphone!) features Lance from Detroit, a woman (Pat) wearing a Green Bay Packer shirt who guesses Lance's weight, and Greg from Ohio (Pat guesses his weight, too).
In 1998, Leon Pendarvis sits in for Paul for the fourth straight night.
In 1998, Paul Simon appears to promote his short-run Broadway flop "Capeman."
In 1998, Top Ten Surprises in "Titanic" - 2. Passengers jump off side when Kathie Lee starts singing, "If they could see me now..."
In 1999, CBS Mailbag: 1) Paul Shaffer's '98 Boxing Day Special; 2) Jay Johnson--guy is to watch every Late Show to note the position of the Top Ten List (sounds a little familiar!); 3) Dave buys pets at Dunkin' Donuts; 4) Paul's song about Impeached Presidents, with 4 dancing women.
In 1999, Guest Jim Gaffigan does some good stand-up comedy.
In 1999, Paul gives us another millennium fact: there will be a champagne shortage.
In 1999, Top Ten Ways the NBA Can Get Their Fans Back.
In 2001, Biff is outside; in honor of the New York Giants' success, he inflates a football till it explodes, but the show goes to the Top 10 list and misses the explosion.
In 2001, Clinton Classic Joke involves Clinton's physical saying that he's overweight with a sore throat.
In 2001, Dave calls upstairs again and eventually talks to Steph. It's her 26th birthday; she went to Planet Hollywood for dinner. Dave wants her to get him tickets to a screening of the motion picture "Snatch".
In 2001, Dave mentions that "Ed" won a People's Choice Award yesterday. Dave's show has never even been nominated, because the people don't like him? Next, apparently Alan Kalter's Campaign Roundup won a People's Choice Award for the single most exciting moment in TV-- we see a clip, after which, Alan runs off, screaming "I'm rich", "Screw you Letterman", etc.
In 2001, Dave's desk story: When he was out to dinner, he saw a woman who looked like Tammy Faye Bakker. She was with a guy who looked like Roberto Duran. She said, "When Tim comes down in April, I'm gonna tell him to bring his banjo."
In 2001, For the first show of the 21st century, the band plays Dave over to the desk with the 20th Century Fox theme.
