General events on January 6th

In 1974, the United States began Night Saving Time, or whatever it was called, as President Nixon, under pressure from the gasoline shortage due to the oil embargo, put the United States on year-round Daylight Saving (not Savings) Time. Boy, was it really hard to get up in the morning!
In 1998, DECAPITATED: Copenhagen's Little Mermaid statue, by vandals. It was the second time in 33 years that the beloved symbol's head has been sawed off. The bronze statue of a mermaid gazing wistfully out to sea has also had an arm sawed off and her neck slashed.

Government and Politics on January 6th

In 1945, future president of the United States, George Bush, married Barbara Pierce at the First Presbyterian Church in Rye, New York.
In 1969, future president Jimmy Carter, then governor of Georgia, and members of the Lions Club in Leary, Georgia, saw what they claimed was an unidentified flying object (UFO). Ten years later, Carter claimed he was attacked by a rabbit.

In 1962, "The Beany and Cecil Show", TV Cartoon Show, debut on ABC. A Bob Clampett cartoon.
In 1966, Gilligan's Island episode #52. "Not Guilty". A crate containing coconuts is wrapped in an old Honolulu newspaper that read that one of the Castaways are being sought in a murder investigation. The castaways become suspicious of each other and decide to recreate the events of the night before they sailed, in order to solve the Randolph Blake murder case.
In 1967, "The Milton Berle Show", TV Variety, last aired on ABC.
In 1973, the five-minute animated lesson series "Schoolhouse Rock" premiered on ABC TV with the "Multiplication Rock" series. The short animated features used Rock music to teach children educational basics between Saturday morning cartoons. And they're back: the Shoolhouse Rock tribute album by contemporary artists have made the series cool all over again.
In 1975, "Wheel Of Fortune", TV Game Show, debut on NBC. The original host was Chuck Woolery and the letter turner was Susan Stafford.
In 1995, "The Kids In The Hall" TV Comedy Variety last aired on CBS.

In 1999, Bob Newhart has a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. More than 200 fans gathered on the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk to witness unveiling of Newhart's star, the 2,127th to be dedicated in the famous walkway. Newhart, 69, launched his career in 1959 with his famous comedy routine utilizing a one-man, two-way telephone conversation, delivered with his trademark deadpan grin. He became a household name with sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart.

In 1977, under pressure from striking employees at the company's pressing and distribution center, EMI Records announced they had dropped the group only weeks after singing them for 40,000 pounds and releasing only one single. No reason is given, but an EMI office memo alludes to the group's "disgraceful...aggressive behavior" and EMI's responsibility to "encourage restraint." So EMI fired off some Pistols, huh.

Sports events on January 6th

In 1994, in Detroit, America's leading contender for Olympic figure skating gold medal, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked and wounded in the knee by Tonya Harding's bodyguard following practice. As she was recuperating and training for the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, an investigation of the incident pointed to Kerrigan's rival, Tonya Harding, as being involved in the plot. Four men, including Jeff Gillooly, the ex-husband of Kerrigan's rival, Tonya Harding, were later sentenced to prison for their roles in the attack; Harding, who denied advance knowledge of the attack, received probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution. "Weird Al" Yankovic sang a verse of this event in his song "Headline News".

In 1983, Levon Helm is scheduled to be on the show, but he doesn't appear. So Gerard Mulligan takes his place, accepting the studio audience's applause as he discusses Levon's career.
In 1986, It's the first new show of the year: No comedy piece for the first segment is ready, so Dave spends the time announcing the goofiest lyric of 1985 ("I had a dream, I had an awesome dream," from Lionel Richie's "Say You, Say Me"), complaining about his new haircut ("I look like a duck"), and forcing out his first guest, Don King. Also introduced is a month-long "Soup of the Day" feature. Tonight, Jimmy Fitzgerald pays tribute to Creme of Asparagus.
In 1987, Dave invites Harvey Pekar across the hall to the Live-at-Five set. Harvey can't shut up, asking Al Roker about his days working in Harvey's hometown, Cleveland.
In 1988, Dave calls the NYC Air and Noise Complaints Bureau. The bureau hangs up on him, so Dave throws the phone out the window. Also, Gerard Mulligan shows his book of Bill Keane cartoons from "Family Circus" as "Atlanta City Showgirls" (Laurie Diamond and Laurie Guthrie) shoot an arrow into Keane's book.
In 1989, Viewer Mail: Guitarist Sid McGinnis is fired from the show, so he goes to the NBC Employment Office and finds employment in the network's mailroom, quickly working himself up to CEO. The next Viewer Mail letter is interrupted with a "Please Stand By" card, as the show is suddenly replaced by "Soggy (Dave) the Dunk-Tank Clown," a Sid McGinnis Production.
In 1993, "Stagehand Theater": Al Maher and Joe Gorta present their rendtion of "Amy Fisher: My Story." Meanwhile, Doogie Howser's Neil Patrick Harris is in the control room as Hal Gurnee's apprentice.
In 1994, Chris Elliott performs the title song from "Cabaret"; legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman follows with a rendition of "Danse Espagnole." After Perlman's performance, Dave wants to go backstage and slap Chris.
