In 1896, according to The Tonight Show, Polygamy was outlawed in Utah. The reason: they found out that guys had enough trouble remembering just one wedding anniversary.

In 1984, the break-up of AT&T took place as the telecommunications giant was divested of its 22 Bell System companies under terms of an antitrust agreement; AT&T's 22 owned Bell system companies divests into eight companies.
In 2000, computers worldwide crashed everywhere as Y2K arrives to mass confusion amongst the computers who think they're 100 years behind! Airplanes fall out of the sky! Bank accounts dry up! Social Security payments cease! VCRs are stuck in eternal 12:00 mode. Dogs and cats living together in peaceful harmony! Ellen goes back into the closet! Computers crash worldwide! The power grid fails! The moon crashes into venus! Saturn gives Uranis a ring! George Michael begins touching other people! Susan Lucci's Emmy was declared a practical joke! In 2000, The arrival of 2000 saw no terrorist attacks, Y2K meltdowns or mass suicides among doomsday cults, but instead saw seven continents stepping joyously and peacefully into the New Year.

In 2001, Actor Ray Walston ("Damn Yankees," "The Sting," "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," TV's "My Favorite Martian") died in Beverly Hills, California, at age 86.
In 2008, Eddie Murphy celebrated New Year's Day by symbolically tying the knot with film producer Tracey Edmonds. They're not legal spouses.

Entertainment-TV events on January 1st

In 1954, NBC gets demented with the debut of "The Spike Jones Show." Millions of viewers arrive each week with bells on to watch classical music be tortured by bandleader Jones who's occasionally there with bells on, even though he might be late.
In 1965, Kids TV show host Soupy Sales tells viewers to get their parent's wallets and take out "those little green pieces of paper" with pictures of Presidents, and send them to him. He is fired, but later reinstated.
In 1971, in a Brady Bunch episode called "The Impractical Joker", One of Jan's practical jokes boomerangs; she becomes a victim of her own joke when she takes Greg's pet mouse and loses it.
In 1976, It was a lot less than two years before Nebraska Public Television spoke up. The two Ns were geometrically identical (a square, a vertical line, a diagonal line). NPT's N was all red, NBC's N was half red half blue. NBC paid big bucks (rumored to be $1 million or even more) for two things: Market research and for a trademark search. Judging by the public reaction to the N and by the conflict with NPT, they were robbed. NBC settled by giving NPT a large quantity of used television equipment. The post-N peacock was quite a bit different from the pre-N peacock. The post-N peacock had nine feathers, but a few years later that was reduced to six, which is the peacock still used today. The other NBC logo is called the Snake.

In 1962, The Beatles made a trial recording in the Decca record studio for a recording contract, but the producer rejected the band stating he didn't like their sound and the trend was away from guitar groups and prefering to sign Brian Poole & The Tremeloes instead. Human error!
In 1969, R.C., "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" by Marmalade peaked at #1 on the U.K. pop singles chart.
In 1979, Following a New Years Eve concert that began the night before featuring the Blues Brothers and the Grateful Dead, Bill Graham closes San Francisco's Winterland Theater. The Dead had performed there a record 48 times.
