In 1831, American industrialist George Pullman, who invented the Pullman sleeping car for railroads at his Pullman Palace Car Company, was born in Brocton, New York. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker, Pullman became a building contractor in Chicago, Illinois, in 1855 and in 1867 he organized the Pullman Palace Car Company, which manufactured sleeping cars, parlor cars and dining cars for the nation's passenger trains. He died on October 19, 1897.
