In 1902, American aviation pioneer Charles A. Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan. "Lucky Lindy" was the first to fly solo and nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean when he piloted "The Spirit of St. Louis" from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927. His fame also brought tragedy -- his infant son was kidnapped for ransom and later found dead in 1932. Lindbergh died of cancer at his home near Hana, Maui, Hawaii, on August 26, 1974; he was 72.
