In 0342, A.D., the real Jolly Old Saint Nicholas died on this day. He became associated with gift giving because he secretly provided dowries to poor brides-to-be. He also established the first known homes for the aged. “A Visit From St. Nicholas” or “Twas The Night Before Christmas” is the most famous Christmas poem, written by Dr. Clement Clarke Moore, a New York minister for his children in 1822.
