At closing credits time, Charlene Tilton, the guest host, was saying goodbye to the audience when Charles Rocket, who was in a “Who Shot J.R.” sketch with her in the previous segment, then asks “who the ʹfʹ did it?” and the audience roared. In 2000, DL PART 1: David Letterman, on his first show back after quintuple bypass surgery, fought back tears as he thanked the doctors and nurses who “saved my life.” Otherwise, the “Late Show” host proved heart surgery hasnʹt softened his cutting humor. During the show, taped the previous Friday, he took shots at CBS, NBC, ABC, Hillary Rodham Clinton, decaffeinated coffee and the Super Bowl halftime show. Looking thinner but otherwise healthy five weeks after his operation, Letterman reached down twice and touched his toes before his monologue.
